Under the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies are required to cover breast pumps, at no cost. The language of the law is vague and leaves lots of variation in the types of breast pumps covered by the insurance company. Some companies cover electric pumps which are only capable of expressing breast milk on one breast at a time. Some companies only cover manual breast pumps. Typically, upgraded breast pumps are not covered completely and require an upgrade fee. Upgraded breast pumps usually contain internal, rechargeable batteries, and additional components such as back packs.
